Frequently Asked Questions

These are questions I get asked a lot and am I'm only going to answer once.  If you ask me these questions in the future, I'm going to assume you're only doing so to troll me.  I encourage my followers to direct people to this page if someone genuinely doesn't know the answer.

What does "Marushia" mean and where does it come from?

Without going into detail, the name is actually derived from my real name.  I had attempted to translate my given name into another language many years ago.  That translation turned out to be incorrect - I later learned what it was supposed to be - but I still liked the result "Marushia" and decided to keep it.  I thought it sounded cool (and still do), and so I've used it ever since as my online identity (though I'm sure I'm far from the only Marushia online).

I also like how it's managed to stand the test of time and how it sounds sort of exotic and no one can quite pin its origins.  I enjoy basking in the ambiguity.

How do you pronounce it?

A lot of people struggle with this and I'm not really sure why, since it's perfectly phonetic: mah ROO shee Ah

  • Only slight emphasis on the "mah"

  • Most emphasis on the "ROO"

  • Least on the "shee"

  • A little bit more on the "Ah"

Thus: mah ROO shee Ah

So not "MAH roo shee ah," or "mah roo SHEE ah," like I've heard people say before.  Just "mah ROO shee Ah."

Why the name "Dark"?

Around the same period as I'd adopted "Marushia," I was dealing with a lot of negative shit in my life, my mind going to some very dark places - up to and including thoughts of nihilistic despair and suicide - grappling with what Carl Jung referred to as The Shadow.  Since then, I've clawed my way back out of the darkness, mostly on my own, or with the help of family and friends, as well as several great and inspiring teachers.  The name serves as a reminder of my darker past and the dark days that still lie ahead.

Why hide your identity?

Most people assume I've elected to keep my true identity a secret because I'm afraid for my life and the lives of my loved ones.  While that's always something to be concerned about, especially as a public figure, that wasn't my main motivation, since plenty of other controversial figures show their faces and often times even lay their lives out for all to see.  My reasoning can be likened more to a sort of "death of the author" in that I don't want people's reception of my arguments to be based on who I am, but rather on the merits of what I say.

Will you ever reveal yourself?

Eventually, I expect I might, if it becomes too annoying to maintain.  I'm sure some asshole with a chip on their shoulder will probably dox me long before then.  It would certainly make my life a lot easier if they did, as this is a lot of work, but it would also come at a great expense to humanity if this experiment just ended before it had a chance to succeed.  If anyone were to do that, they would most likely be someone who likewise ruined Santa Claus and the Easter Bunny for the rest of their childhood friends or who goes around posting spoilers to books and movies.  If that ever happens, and if you care at all about what I'm trying to accomplish here in bringing people together, then we can unite in collectively ignoring them since they probably did it for attention.

Why do you have a Homestuck avatar?

The short answer - and the one that should be most obvious - is that I'm a fan of the series.  I think the story and the music are fantastic (it's been called the Ulysses of the Internet), and it's highly meme-able, which makes it good for reactions.  You're free to disagree, I suppose, but you'd be wrong.

Why Meenah, specifically?

Because I'm a Pisces and, after Vriska, Meenah's the best troll on the internet.  Sorry, Kekistanis and 4chan, but your undisputed queen has spoken.  38D

What's your preferred gender pronoun?

Whatever the most obnoxious word you can think of is.  Alternatively, I prefer floccinaucinihilipilificate.

Just kidding.  I don't really care.  You can call me whatever you want and I promise I won't be offended.  There is literally nothing you can call me that would offend me.  He, she ... doesn't matter.  Although, if you wanna be accurate, since you don't know what I am, "they" is actually grammatically correct as a gender-neutral singular pronoun.

What's transhumanism?

To quote Wikipedia: "Transhumanism is an international intellectual movement that aims to transform the human condition by developing and making widely available sophisticated technologies to greatly enhance human intellect and physiology."

Essentially, I advocate for such a philosophy, and you should too, as we humans have been doing just that since we first discovered fire, so it's nothing new and it's highly unlikely to reverse.  Only the rate at which things are advancing now is different.  I predict that, by roughly the year 2047, we will see the rise of the singularity, and from there, the human race as we know it will cease to exist within the next fifty to a hundred years.  What exactly that means, I don't know, but I have a few creative guesses and I'm dying to find out.  Aren't you?

It won't all be good, and it won't all be bad.  My goal is to help maximize the good while minimizing the bad, but no matter what I do, a great deal of suffering will be in the works for many.  The rest of us will just have to learn to adapt if we're to survive.

As an aside, I consider most critics of this philosophy to suffer from fatal levels of lack of imagination.

What are your political beliefs?

Complex and nuanced, but people prefer simplicity, so I'll try to give a simple answer.  I generally reject traditional left-right dichotomy, as well as liberal-conservative dichotomy.  I think it's inaccurate and polarizing and so I try to shy away from using those terms when I can, preferring to treat people as individuals and to judge their arguments and policies based on individual merit rather than who they are or where they came from.  That said, I generally favor social liberalism and economic conservatism, which typically gets abbreviated to "libertarian," though there are some exceptions.  Tarl Warwick's views are actually pretty close to my own.

More recently I've started using the term "ultra-centrist" to suggest a willingness to hear arguments from any person at any point along the political spectrum, weighing people and policies on an individual basis before accepting or rejecting them.

I try to derive my values based on first principles and Natural Law, so I believe in things like free speech, property rights, freedom of association, the non-initiation of force, the right to travel, etc.; and from all that, certain things follow, such as a belief that the government that governs best governs least, though I am not beyond using the power of the State in the short-term if it means moving in the direction of more freedom in the long-term.

Are you an anarchist?

No, I think anarchy is a logical contradiction and ignores the desire of some people to voluntarily come together to subject themselves to an external governing body.  Some people can govern themselves, others can't or don't want to, and thus the latter need at least some form of government (ideally run by the former).  Of course, because none of us is a mind-reader, the difficulty lies in sorting out those two groups.

Why a nationalist?

Governance from the bottom-up tends to be the least oppressive.  Individuals form families, who form tribes, who form cities, which form States, and then federations.  The State is simply like a club or family or home, but on a larger scale.  I've often said that States are like giant safe spaces where people can retreat to in order to have their particular political and cultural views observed, respected, and maintained.  Towards that end, and to the extent that people's views are irreconcilable, I support the right of secession as well as systems such as Balkanization, so that everyone can have their own place to be who they wanna be and live how they wanna live without infringing on the rights or desires of others to do the same.

Libertarianism and nationalism are highly compatible, as are libertarianism and transhumanism.

As a general formula, I maintain that nationalism keeps government small and accountable, which means better economy, which leads to better tech, which means better quality of life, which ultimately means greater freedom and happiness.  This is a self-reinforcing upward spiral and I predict that, within the next fifty years, technology will completely obviate both government and the culture war of identity politics, regardless of whatever else happens socio-politically.

What are your religious beliefs?

I think there is a place in this world for organized religion.  Certainly people who have no moral compass can stand to benefit from it.  But by and large, I view institutional religion as merely a phase of human spiritual growth - something to be transcended in favor of a more direct relationship with the powers that be.  Since childhood, I've tried to study religious texts comparatively and I find that many of them have the same core tenants, while differing in the details.

I think those ideas which different cultures converge on are more likely to be true.  Things like the Golden Rule, a belief in a higher cosmic intelligence than man, the unity of all, divination, karma and reincarnation, etc.

Do you believe in God?

I generally dislike the word "belief."  As one of my teachers often said, you can't spell "belief" without "lie."  Do I think God exists?  Well, that depends on what you mean by God.  There are many conceptions of God, some of which are more plausible than others.

As a short-hand, I often label myself an occult deist, a pagan, and an astro-theologist.  My views are also very similar to those of Thomas Jefferson and Thomas Paine in that I think most religious texts are allegorical, rather than historical, though there are some good and valuable moral lessons to retain from them.  I tend to view deities as archetypes, thought-forms, or in some cases just higher intelligences than mankind.  Ancient aliens also seem like a plausible explanation for many religious myths.

Are you a Mason / Templar / Globalist / Satanist / Illuminatus / Builderburger / Bohemian Grover / Jesuit / Khazar / Zionist / NWO / George Soros plant and-or shill?

None of the above.  In fact, I know just enough about each of those things to know they ought to be vehemently opposed whenever possible, which is partly what motivates me to continue along this path.  That said, a lot of the people in those secret societies are probably way smarter than most of you reading this, and certainly more powerful.

Step one to defeating your enemy is in figuring out what they know.

My Work

Work

Your work is kind of ... dark.

Ya think?  Not sure what you came here expecting.  Also, that's not a question.

Describe your work in three words.

Not for children.

(Also not a question.)

At what age would you say is it appropriate to read your work?

Every child is different.  Some mature faster, others never really mature at all.  There are even fully grown adults who'd read my writings and have a mental breakdown in the current year.  As a general rule, though, I'd say if you'd feel comfortable letting your kids watch Game of Thrones or House of Cards, then they should be fine, not just because it's graphic, but also because some of the material might simply be over their heads philosophically.

Common Sense would say somewhere around fourteen to seventeen.  If you're reading this and you're a kid, close the browser and go read Harry Potter or something.  Also, let your parents know you need a hug.

Beyond that, I wash my hands of responsibility for any poor parenting decisions.

Where can I read your books?

You can get my books exclusively on Amazon or through an Amazon affiliate such as Goodreads.  Just do a search for the title and my name and it should pop up (or clicks the links in this paragraph).  The Nav Bar at the top will direct you to the main website for Thelema, where you can download a free sample, as well as find direct links to the paperback and ebook forms.  Make sure to get the latest edition.

Currently working on getting print copies made available in the Amazon Store.  At this time, I don't have hard cover or audio versions.  Sorry.  Maybe someday.

What's the best way to support you?

Buying my books is really the best way to help me financially.  I will have merchandise coming in the future.  You can also support me on Patreon if you just like my blog.  That also really helps, since I don't make any money off of that otherwise.  There are no advertisers or sponsors on this site and hopefully there never will be.

Apart from that that, just sharing my articles on social media and drumming up attention via word of mouth really helps.  I do this for you guys and I thank you for your support.
